Most connectors in a vehicle are mated once on the assembly line and never touched again. Their rated durability reflects that. A tin-plated automotive terminal is commonly rated for something on the order of ten cycles, and some families for fewer. That rating is not a safety margin against careless handling. It is a wear budget.
Every insertion scrapes plating off the contact surface. Tin is soft, and the mating action displaces it. Once base metal is exposed, oxidation and fretting corrosion follow, contact resistance rises, and the circuit turns intermittent under vibration or temperature. Gold raises the budget substantially, which is one of the reasons it is specified on connectors designed to come apart repeatedly: diagnostic ports, test interfaces, serviceable modules, anything a technician will unmate.
Where this catches a harness programme is in rework and testing. A connector unmated and remated during end-of-line diagnostics, then a fault investigation, then a rework loop, then a service operation, has consumed a large part of its rated life before the vehicle is delivered. Treating connectors as freely reusable during debugging spends a specification nobody budgeted for.
It also constrains substitution. Two terminals from the same family, differing only in plating, can differ in durability rating by an order of magnitude. Accepting a tin part where the drawing calls for gold may fit, crimp and function on day one, and quietly fail the durability requirement the circuit was designed against, in a way that shows up as a warranty pattern rather than a delivery problem.
Harness Code states plating and, where the manufacturer publishes it, the durability rating on any alternative it proposes, so a substitution is checked against the requirement rather than against the fit.

USCAR and LV214 (automotive connector test standards)
USCAR-2 and LV214 are the two dominant automotive connector qualification standards. USCAR-2 is the North American specification from the US Council for Automotive Research; LV214 is the German OEM specification. A substitute part has to carry the standard the drawing names.
