Minimum order quantity (MOQ)

Minimum order quantity (MOQ) is the smallest quantity a supplier will sell of a given part. It is usually set by the packaging unit, a reel or a bag, and it can force a buyer to purchase far more material than the shortage actually requires.

Also known as

MOQ, minimum buy, minimum order value, MOV, standard pack quantity, SPQ

MOQ is a manufacturing and logistics artefact, not a commercial obstruction. Terminals are wound onto reels at a fixed count. Housings are bagged or boxed in standard pack quantities. Breaking a reel means opening a sealed unit, which costs labour and, on some parts, separates the goods from the packaging that carries the date and lot code. So the manufacturer sells the reel.

The numbers are asymmetric across a BOM. A housing might carry an MOQ in the hundreds. The terminal that goes into it arrives on a reel holding tens of thousands. A cavity plug comes in a bag of several thousand. A harness builder short of a few hundred terminals for a service run is being asked to buy a full reel, and the residue then sits in stores indefinitely.

Related terms sit alongside it. Standard pack quantity is the packaging unit itself. Minimum order value is a monetary floor rather than a piece-count floor, common on low-value parts where the transaction costs more than the goods. Order multiples require quantities in whole packs, so a larger number is available and a smaller one is not.

MOQ is also part of why open market stock exists at all. Last-time-buy quantities are ordered against a forecast, forecasts are wrong, and the surplus becomes the inventory a later shortage depends on.

For a buyer, the useful question is not how to avoid MOQ but who can break it. An independent distributor working from existing lots can often supply a partial quantity where a factory-fed channel cannot, because the stock is already outside its original packaging chain.

Harness Code quotes against the quantity actually needed where the stock allows it, and states the pack format and the available quantity rather than defaulting to a full reel.
