Obsolete / End-of-Life (EOL) component

An obsolete or End-of-Life component is one the manufacturer has stopped producing. It usually passes through an NRND warning and a last-time-buy window first, after which the only remaining supply is existing channel stock, excess inventory, or a qualified alternative.

Also known as

EOL, discontinued part, obsolete part, NRND (not recommended for new designs), last-time-buy part

Obsolescence is a lifecycle event, not an accident. A manufacturer announces that a family is not recommended for new designs, sets a last-time-buy date, sets a last-ship date, and stops. Vehicle programmes run for a decade or more and service obligations run longer, so an EOL notice on a connector or terminal rarely lines up with the end of the harness that uses it.

That leaves a buyer three routes.

Find remaining genuine stock. It exists, distributed across distributors, contract manufacturers and excess inventory, and it is not in one searchable place. This is where an independent distributor with a real supplier network is worth more than a catalogue.

Qualify an alternative. Often the successor family is close but not identical: a different terminal, a different seal, a different keying, sometimes a different mating half, which means a change on both ends of the connection.

Redesign the harness section. The most expensive option and sometimes the only correct one.

The risk in route one is that obsolete, in-demand parts are exactly the parts most attractive to counterfeit and re-labelled supply.

Harness Code works obsolete and EOL parts as a core case: locating remaining stock through verified channels, checking date and lot codes on what comes back, and where no genuine stock exists, proposing an alternative with the functional differences written down rather than glossed over.
