The risk is created by scarcity. When a part is available at normal lead times from the normal channel, there is no incentive to fake it. When it is unavailable everywhere and a line is down, an unverified offer appears within hours, and it is priced to be accepted quickly.
What shows up in practice on connectivity components: re-labelled packaging, correct-family housings with the wrong plating on the terminals, recycled parts cleaned and re-bagged, off-tool copies that mate and then fail on retention or sealing, and mixed lots where genuine stock is padded with imitations.
What reduces the risk is not a slogan, it is process. Sourcing through channels with a known and documented supplier chain rather than an anonymous broker offer. Checking date and lot codes against packaging and paperwork. Reading the packaging itself for label quality, coherence and consistency across the lot. Visual and dimensional checks against the manufacturer drawing. Refusing offers that cannot answer where the stock came from.

Date code and lot code
A date code shows when a component was manufactured, usually as a year and week. A lot code identifies the production batch it came from. Together they let a buyer trace a part back through the supply chain and check that stock is genuine, recent and consistent.
Obsolete / End-of-Life (EOL) component
An obsolete or End-of-Life component is one the manufacturer has stopped producing. It usually passes through an NRND warning and a last-time-buy window first, after which the only remaining supply is existing channel stock, excess inventory, or a qualified alternative.
Allocation and lead time
Allocation is when demand for a component exceeds supply and the manufacturer rations output across customers instead of quoting freely. Lead time is the interval between placing an order and receiving it. When a part goes on allocation, its lead time stretches and stops being a promise.
