Suspect is the operative word. A part does not have to be proven fake to be a problem. It has to be unconfirmable, and an unconfirmable part cannot go into a vehicle.
What triggers suspicion on connectivity components is usually mundane. Packaging that does not match the manufacturer's current labelling. Label print quality, fonts or barcodes that vary within a single lot. Date codes spread across several years in a delivery that should be batch-coherent. Evidence of re-bagging or re-reeling. Housings whose moulding, gate marks or colour differ subtly from known-good stock. Terminals whose plating colour or thickness looks wrong, or whose retention feels soft in the cavity.
Incoming inspection is where those signals get caught, and it works as a documented process rather than an impression. Check the paperwork against the order and the supplier chain. Check packaging and labels for coherence across the lot. Check date and lot codes and record them. Check parts against the manufacturer drawing, visually and dimensionally. Sample-check fit against the mating half, and for terminals, against the cavity they have to seat in.
When something is suspect, the correct action is to quarantine it, not to argue it into acceptance under schedule pressure. A part that reaches the line unresolved becomes a field failure discovered by a customer.

Counterfeit risk and verified sourcing channels
Counterfeit risk is the risk of receiving fake, re-labelled, recycled or out-of-specification components presented as genuine. It rises sharply for parts that are scarce, obsolete or on allocation, which is exactly when buyers are forced outside their usual channels.
Date code and lot code
A date code shows when a component was manufactured, usually as a year and week. A lot code identifies the production batch it came from. Together they let a buyer trace a part back through the supply chain and check that stock is genuine, recent and consistent.
Open market / broker sourcing
Open market sourcing means buying components outside the manufacturer's authorised channel, from excess inventory, other distributors and stockholders. It is often the only route to a part that is obsolete or on allocation, and it carries a verification burden the authorised channel does not.
Franchised vs independent distributor
A franchised or authorised distributor holds a contract with the manufacturer and buys directly from the factory. An independent distributor has no such contract and sources from the open market: excess inventory, other distributors, and stock outside the manufacturer's direct channel.
