Date code and lot code

A date code shows when a component was manufactured, usually as a year and week. A lot code identifies the production batch it came from. Together they let a buyer trace a part back through the supply chain and check that stock is genuine, recent and consistent.

Also known as

date stamp, batch code, lot number, traceability code, manufacturing code

Date codes are typically four digits: year and calendar week, so 2418 means week 18 of 2024. Lot or batch codes are manufacturer-specific and appear on the reel, bag or box label, and often in the packing documentation. On connectivity components the codes usually live on the packaging rather than on the part, which makes the packaging part of the evidence.

They matter for three reasons.

Age. Elastomer seals, adhesives and some plated contacts have shelf-life guidance. Very old stock is not automatically bad, but it is something the buyer should know before it goes into a harness.

Consistency. A single order that arrives with a wide spread of unrelated date codes, mismatched label fonts, or re-labelled packaging is a signal worth stopping on. Genuine channel stock tends to be batch-coherent.

Recall and containment. If a defect surfaces months later, the lot code is what limits the investigation to the affected batches instead of the whole build.

Harness Code checks date and lot codes on incoming shortage stock, keeps the supplier chain documented for each order, and passes the codes on. That is a factual traceability practice under an ISO 9001:2015 quality system certified by AQ Cert. It is not a certified authenticity guarantee, and no honest independent distributor should present it as one.
